Reels: How Short-Form Videos Influence Content Creation

These years, reels have become a feature in almost all famous social media applications, such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Shopee, Lazada, and Youtube. For many aspiring content creators, reels are best to use for various contents.

But why has this feature been constantly used by people?

Content creators claim that reels are for people who have a short attention span. People get bored when unnecessary details are mixed in the video. They will either skip some parts or simply scroll and not watch the whole video. People tend to watch videos that are straightforward—have a brief introduction, and immediately into the products that content creators promote, if one is an affiliate.

Not only that, people also have no more time to watch long videos. They watch reels for short entertainment. They go to these features for quick, engaging content that fits into their busy schedule. Same goes with content creators, the majority cannot produce long videos because of their availability, so they use reels for various contents, not worrying about creating longer videos for audiences.

For some content creators, they use reels to show what is recently happening to their life, compile these to create a vlog, and post on other social media applications. A vlog is a compilation of clips, and reels, to be specific, can be the teaser or summary of the vlog, which will attract more viewers and make them want to watch the longer video or even other videos created by the content creator.

2.35 billion people interact with reels every month according to Demandstage. Due to their widespread popularity, using and watching reels has become the norm. Some content creators cut longer videos to create reels. For example, Facebook reels contain several clips from movies and series. While this can lead to copyright issues, content creators often use them to boost engagement.

Similar to others, reels content creation still relies on strategies. The rapid usage of reels has led content creators to implement the same strategies, making it boring for audiences who previously watched the same type of videos or even resulting in backlash for copying content. On the other hand, content creators who innovate with new ideas that capture the audience’s attention are impressive. Thus, content creators deserve recognition for their creativity and effort in the world of reels.

Reels are designed to be attention-grabbing, which is a chance for content creators to reach a wider audience. The usage of trending sounds, memes, or other creative elements means it will show up on the pages of people who liked the same types of videos. Moreover, it can spread to other people when the reels go viral.

It is a short-form video content, yet it serves valuable purposes: for education, to teach other people through tutorial and informational reels; for promotion, to highlight the benefits and uses of products; for showcasing, to express their creativity; and for entertainment, to engage with current trends. These and other purposes prove that reels have an influence on content creation.
